  City to River
City to River is a grassroots movement advocating improved connections between the communities of the central riverfront and the Mississippi River. The Gateway Arch, iconic symbol of St. Louis, was built nearly fifty years ago. We seek to restore the legacy of generations through a redesign of areas surrounding the Arch grounds and riverfront in both Missouri and Illinois. We are promoting the removal of the section of Interstate 70 between I-64 and Cass Avenue north of downtown in favor of a boulevard that promotes a walkable, liveable community in Downtown St. Louis. On August 17, 2010 the 5 finalist teams in "Framing a Modern Masterpiece," The City + Arch + River Design Competition, will unveil their submissions. For one week, the public will have the opportunity to comment on these five transformative designs. We want strong community input that either supports or at least does not prohibit urban highway removal. The window of opportunity is brief. The organizers of City to River request that you join us and other community leaders in finding out more about the City to River movement, the benefits of a boulevard vs. an urban highway, and how you can be part of our effort to engage the community to support liveable, walkable connections for downtown St. Louis and our Riverfront. Join us on August 11th at Foam Coffeehouse and Bar, 3359 South Jefferson Avenue, St Louis, Missouri 63118. For more information about City to River and our proposal, visit www.citytoriver.org.

"Knee-High Fire in the Pouring Rain"
Join wilderness survival instructor Byron Kerns for this seminar, an enlightening, fun, and informative evening of skills, stories, and advice relating to his more than thirty-years of teaching the art of wilderness survival. A former US Air Force Survival Instructor and author of the book "Deep Survival," Byron refuses to be labeled a "survival expert." He much prefers to remain a "humble student with darn good teaching skills." Humorous at times, yet quite serious at others, he offers seminar participants an outstanding opportunity to better understand the seven priorities of survival and his far-reaching philosophy of always being prepared to help others at all times in the wilderness. "Better than a book, better than a reality show," Byron says in his laid-back drawl. "And, the good thing is, if you remember only one sentence of what I have to say, it may be the one that saves your life." At REI, 1703 S. Brentwood Blvd, St. Louis 63144. Visit http://www.rei.com/event/4849/session/5837 for more info.

The Life of Birds: Finding Partners (Audubon Event)
Finding a partner is never an easy business. In dense forest it is difficult to attract attention, and even harder to keep a potential mate around long enough to show off and prove that you are the hottest thing on two legs. In a highly competitive market, male birds go to enormous lengths to display their worth. With amazing settings like the Galapagos Islands, the Alaskan tundra and the rainforest of the Amazon, see the mating displays of frigate birds, red phalaropes, calfbirds and cock-of-the-rocks, to name just a few. Watch birds dance, fight, sing, build and even “decorate” to win a mate. Sir David Attenborough, one of the world's foremost naturalists, hosts this extraordinary series into the secret lives of these magnificent creatures. Over three years in the making, with stunning slow-motion and computer enhanced special effects, this landmark series is timeless. (Please note that the nature of the material may make it unsuitable for some children.) This 60 minute documentary will be shown in the auditorium of the St. Louis County Library Thornhill branch at 12863 Willowyck Drive. From I-270, take Exit 16 Page Ave/Hwy 364 west to Bennington. Turn left at the end of the ramp and right at the next light at Fee Fee. Turn right again at the next light at the library. Questions, call Mitch Leachman at (314) 599-7390.

SWIMMERS! James River Basin Partnership (JRBP) will be holding its second annual Swimmin' In Moonshine open water swim competition on August 28th, 2010. Around 300 swimmers are expected to participate. Swimmers will have a choice of  500 yard, 1 mile or  2 mile swim course around unique Moonshine Beach located at Table Rock Lake. Registration begins at 8:00 am; the race starts at 10:00. If you are interested in swimming please don't hesitate! A large safety staff will be there to secure your success. VOLUNTEERS! This event is a very important fundraiser for JRBP! When you support Swimmin' in Moonshine, you support the ever expanding progress of JRBP in conserving the watershed that our community depends on! All volunteers will be fed a delicious lunch! Volunteers will help with the following: During the morning shift at 7:15 to: check-in and register swimmers; body mark swimmers with numbers; maintain morning snacks; lunch preparation; give water at finish line. In the water shift at 8:30 to: provide course direction to swimmers (in your own kayak); provide a watchful eye and a PFD to swimmers in need (in your own kayak); three Certified Life Guards - you will ride on the back of wave runners! After the race around 12:00 pm to: deflate buoys and take down banners. SPONSORS! Do you share our values in water conservation and the gratitude we have for the clean water at Table Rock Lake? Would you like for 300 swimmers and their families to know this? Please be a fiscal sponsor of this event! We have several different levels of sponsorship available for the environmentally aware gift giver. Not only will this establish you as a member of JRBP, but you will be able to acquire member perks! All sponsors will be able to contribute anything they desire to the swimmers' gift bag. Last year we had people travel from as far as Illinois to participate!
